Queenlock (/queenlock / [Translation Unavailable]) is a subtropical Large Town located in the Cosea Provence of the Kingdom of Hobben.

The name Queenlock is derived from the Sylvin language, as Queenlock was founded by Syllaemus Madden, who was culturaly Sylvin.

Climate

Queenlock has a yearly average temperature of 25°C (77°F), with its average temperature during the summer being a warm 30°C (86°F) and its average temperature during the winter being a pleasant 21°C (69°F). Queenlock receives an average of 293 cm/y (115 in/y) of precipitation, most of which comes in the form of rain during the summer. Queenlock covers an area of nearly 6 km2 (2 mi2), and an average elevation of 1252 m (4107 ft) above sea level.

Overview

Queenlock was founded durring the early 15th century in summer of the year 1416, by Syllaemus Madden. The establishment of Queenlock was plagued by a lack of willing colonists. After attempts to pay people to resettle failed Syllaemus Madden struck deals with nearby nations and communities to establish Queenlock as a prison colony.

Queenlock was built using the conventions of Sylvin durring the early 15th century. Naturaly, all settlmentss have their own look to them, and Queenlock is no diffrent. The town's buildings feature timber and earth construction, with most buildigns first floors resembling mounds of earth, with subsequent floors appearing as elaborate log cabins, with each building forming a tiered pyramid of sorts fromed from the stack of rectangular, peek roofed cabins. Most wooden bracing, support, and trim is carved with decorative knotwork, and the larger structures even feature painted trim which emphasises the knotwork.

Queenlock is is constructed arround a semi-circular restrictive gravel mainstreet, with smaller strait roads linking the circiles to eachother at varrious points. The town is the proud owner of a thick set of fortified walls fashioned from querried stone blocks. While not up to snuff for a fort or castle wall, the town's walls are naturaly much larger than those of forts or castles. Therefore, the construction such a wall is most expencive. Queenlock 's buget focused wall would serve its community well in battle in spite of looking unimpressive compared to castles and fortresses. Queenlock 's top tier civilian fortifications are in an unremarkable state. To some, this is the ideal sate for defences to be in. In need of absoutly nothing, and ready to serve the town as needed.

Right off the bat Queenlock hits you in the face with its success. Everyone, even the peasants, are dressed in well made clothing. Every tool and implement you can see is finely made, and people will boast to you as obvious strangers of the wonders which can be found in their markets. More interestingly is a total lack of beggars, and plenty of new buildings are going up even as you speak. Somehow this town has come into quite a lot of wealth, and recently from the looks of things. Precisely how it has gained its wealth is a mystery. Queenlock is, in a word, disorder. People seem to be allowed to do as they please with little harmoney to anything. It feels less like a town, and more like a spot people just happened to place their homes. Yet there are small elements here and there which show the underlying structure of the community. It’s just so complex, organic, and flowing one can only understand what is a piece of the puzzle, but not what its neighbors are.

Civic Infrastructure

Queenlock has an Office of Civil Groundskeeping, which works to enforce local ordinances relating to the construction and upkeep up of all plant life, water features, and other natural decorations within Queenlock . They are also responsible for the maintenance of these features. Notably, the OCG is not responsible for Queenlock 's parks.

Queenlock has an Office of Civil Vicary, which is responsible for providing a livelyhood for all officialy recognised religious figures within Queenlock .

Queenlock has a Gravedigger's Guild, which is responsible for collecting the dead and laying them to rest according to all applicable laws and religious customs.

Queenlock has a Highwayman's Guild, which is tasked with maintaining the roads and highways leading into town as well as keeping them safe for travelers.

Queenlock has a monistary of an order of Civil Monks, who provide divine-related services to the general public and maintain Queenlock 's public wards, blessings, and other arcane systems.

Queenlock possesses a Galvanic Power Grid, which brings galvanic current to most if not all buildings in town, and permits a great many consumer goods to function within the Large Town. Queenlock 's grid is powered by a boiler and turbine based power plant.

Queenlock has a Parks and Recreation Department, which is responsible for the construction, management, and usage rights for all of its parks and parklands. They are not to be confused with the Office of Civil Groundskeeping as they do not hold authority over nor responsibility for Queenlock 's natural decorations nor waterways.

Queenlock has a public schooling program overseen by the Hall of Sages who has the responsibility of ensuring access to affordable high-quality education in all basic classes (Reading, Writing, Mathmatics, General Sciences, General Arcana, and Social Education) is made available to all citizens.

Queenlock has a public septic system, which allows its citizens to have indoor bathrooms. The septic system is overseen by the League of Sewerkeepers, who posses the legal authority to enforce all laws relating to the septic system, and are also tasked with its maintenance and upkeep.

Cultural Notes

Queenlock 's chapel was built using a different architectural style from the rest of the town. The style used is characterized by vertical proportions, pointed arches, external buttressing, and asymmetry in the general shape of its buildings. The decorative features of the style were key, consisting of large arched windows, pointed arches, vaulted ceilings, flying buttresses, and sculptures integrated into the structure itself. Occasionally, for very important buildings, an array of sculptures or one colossal sculpture might replace the entirety of the entrance to said building.

Due to the actions of local Kami, summer is short in Queenlock .

The Amoeba, Giant near Queenlock are known to be more aggressive than normal.

Queenlock 's citizens partake in a curious ritual relating to their local kami. It takes place in winter and involves reenactments to channel Elven High Magic energies of tier 1 via oratory performances.

Economy

Queenlock is home to some form of natural wonder. It could be a hot spring, or an especially enchanting glade, or a particular vista. Whatever it is, it's such a lovely attraction that Queenlock sees its fair share of tourists every year from all across Eyom. Consequently, its residents speak many languages at a functional level.

Queenlock is known for its unusual rock formations.

History

In time immemorial, reportedly some time during the late 2nd century, Queenlock was attacked by soldiers from another nation, waging a greater campaign. The details of the conflict are hazy at best due to many conflicting accounts. What is known is Queenlock lost 279 people, 262 livestock, and 59 buildings. The conflict ended after roughly 181, when members of Queenlock 's militia enacted an operation to escort a particular elites group to a safe location. The operation was complicated by the militia had access to far less resources than expected. The conflict ended with pitched battle between both forces, which ended in victory for Queenlock 's forces. The war is remembered in legend by Queenlock 's bards, historians, and legend keepers.
